Transforming operational complexity into a simple product experience

Designing the operational platform that enabled restaurants to manage their delivery business during Ame's expansion into food delivery.

Context

Ame was a Brazilian digital wallet with the ambition of becoming a super app by expanding beyond financial services into everyday consumer experiences. One of its strategic initiatives was entering the food delivery market.

The project took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, when delivery became a critical sales channel for restaurants. Launching a consumer marketplace wasn't enough. Restaurant partners also needed a platform capable of managing their daily operations, including orders, menus, pricing and operational settings.

The challenge wasn't simply to design another back-office tool. It was to transform operational complexity into a simple product experience that restaurant teams could rely on during busy service hours.

Understanding operational complexity

I led the design of the restaurant management platform from early discovery through the definition of its core experience.

To understand how restaurants managed their operations, I conducted competitive research, analysed existing data and mapped the workflows required to run a delivery business. Working closely with Product, Engineering and Business, I translated those operational requirements into a coherent product experience that balanced user needs with business objectives.

Unlike consumer products, restaurant operations involve multiple interconnected tasks happening simultaneously. Orders arrive continuously, menus require frequent updates, products become unavailable throughout the day and operational settings directly affect the customer experience.

Rather than approaching each capability as an isolated feature, I designed the platform as a connected operational system where every decision contributed to a consistent end-to-end experience.

Designing a connected operational experience

The platform needed to support a wide range of operational scenarios while remaining efficient for users working under constant time pressure.

Together with the cross-functional team, I defined the product architecture and designed the core workflows that allowed restaurant partners to manage their business from a single platform.

The experience included order management, menu administration, pricing, product availability, operating hours and restaurant settings. Each capability was designed as part of a connected system rather than an independent feature, allowing users to move naturally between tasks without losing context.

Throughout the project, one principle guided every design decision: balancing operational flexibility with simplicity. Restaurants needed access to powerful management capabilities without increasing cognitive load during their daily operations.

To support that goal, I focused on building a clear information architecture, consistent interaction patterns and navigation that made complex workflows feel predictable and easy to use.

Outcome

The platform established the operational foundation that supported Ame's expansion into food delivery.

More than designing individual interfaces, my contribution was structuring a scalable product experience capable of supporting multiple operational workflows within a single system.

Reflection

This project strengthened my ability to design products where complexity cannot be eliminated, only organised.
